After-Hours Visit Spurs Spy Charges

Samuel Straface, CEO of medical technology start-up Medrobotics, noticed an unfamiliar man in a conference room late one evening at the company's Boston headquarters. Uneasy, Straface began conversation with the man who was sitting alone with two laptops and a tablet device. When the man attributed his after-hours work to business with the CEO, Straface called the police who identified the stranger as Dong Liu: a dual Chinese and Canadian citizen. The police arrested Liu on trespassing charges and called the FBI for further investigation. The FBI confiscated ‘an unusual amount of computer equipment’ and Liu is in federal custody, charged with attempting to steal trade secrets and trying to gain unauthorized access to the company's computer system, prosecutors said. If convicted of both charges, he could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

This incident continues the trajectory of FBI arrests for industrial espionage—particularly episodes linked to the Chinese government—which peaked at an all-time high in 2015.
