US State Dept Revamps Travel Security Reporting System

January 24, 2018

Planning on traveling internationally? Prior to departure, it is important to research the safety of your destination. The U.S. Department of State (DOS) offers a wealth of information about traveling abroad.

Recently, the DOS undertook an initiative to provide clearer and more reliable security information for travelers. Under the new system, there is a standardized level of advice based on risks such as crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health risks, and natural disasters.

Travelers to Level 1 countries are still exposed to the same risk that accompanies any international travel but can “Exercise Normal Precautions.” Travelers to Level 2 countries should “Exercise Increased Caution” and should consult DOS information on specific regions that are riskier than others. Anyone visiting Level 3 countries are encouraged to “Reconsider Travel.” The State Department will provide additional advice for travelers in these areas. Finally, “Do Not Travel” to Level 4 countries. There is a significant increase in life-threatening risks in these areas and the U.S. Government may have a limited ability to provide assistance.
