Threat Assessment Best Practices

When facing an internal or external threat, effective physical security practices are crucial for any organization. The best strategy is to conduct a comprehensive assessment to evaluate the threat and then to develop a mitigation plan to address identified vulnerabilities. Ideally, a company has physical security procedures in place that eliminate confusion around communications and threat management protocols. If not, it makes an already stressful situation more intense.

When performing a threat assessment, the first step is considering all factors such as insider and external actors, the impact to who or what is targeted (e.g., brand, executive, facility, etc.), and implications to IT networks and other related company systems. A comprehensive threat assessment can be complex. It is a best practice to develop a variety of complications, to help problem solving and identifying solutions that will drive a clear and concise mitigation plan. For example, evaluating access control and analyzing all the potential ways someone could infiltrate corporate offices may be an appropriate scenario to explore.

It is important for an organization to have a big picture understanding of all potential related threats and vulnerabilities and to have procedures in place to manage a range of crises. While a threatening situation is concerning and certainly anxiety producing, it does provide an opportunity to review and potentially improve physical security procedures and operations.
